Geometric Approaches for Enhancing Edge Quality in Planar Milling (I): by Adjusting the Radial Depth of Cut

 Chih-Hsing Chu

Sponsored By: CODEF/NSF

Abstract

Our previous studies have shown that geometric approaches are highly effective methods for reducing exit burr formation in planar milling. By adjusting the radial depth of cut, the tool always enters into the workpiece, resulting in no exit burr formation. Algorithms are introduced in this report that calculates an appropriate offsetting distance range for the tool path planning. Simulation results as well as test examples are shown to demonstrate the feasibility.
