Probabilistic Analysis of Ductile/Brittle Transition in Diamond Turning of Brittle Materials

Abstract

The ductile/brittle transition depth (critical depth of cut) in brittle materials is dependent on cutting conditions and material properties such as crystallographic orientation of the material. The exact physics associated to this ductile behavior and formation of critical depth of cut is still largely unknown. Therefore a probabilistic approach in determining the optimal critical depth for diamond turning of a brittle material is investigated.
