  Burr formation in Micro-Machining

Kiha Lee, Boris Stern and Ingo Essel

Sponsored By: CODEF

Abstract

A phenomenon similar to the formation of chips is the formation of burrs at the end of a cut. Burrs are undesirable because they present a hazard in handling machined parts and can interfere with subsequent assembly operations. They must be removed in subsequent deburring processes to allow the part to meet specified tolerances. In conventional machining, there are a lot of deburring processes to remove burrs. Except for the cost of the edge finishing operation, deburring processes in the conventional machining are not big problem. In the micro-machining process, however, burr is very hard to remove. Conventional deburring operation cannot easily apply to micro-burrs. The purpose of this report is to research the previous work in micro-machining and to study burr formation in micro-machining.
