Three-Dimensional Finite Element Modeling of Drilling Burr Formation Part II: Burr Formation Mechanism

  Sangkee Min

Sponsored By: CODEF

Abstract

The drilling burr formation was simulated based on the model in Part I and the results were compared with proposed mechanism and high-speed video images. The burr formation mechanism was divided into five stages: steady-state cutting, burr initiation, development, initial fracture, and final burr formation. The differences in the burr formation mechanism between a uniform burr and a crown burr were observed at burr initiation stage and initial fracture stage. Burr size can be estimated from the measurement of the initiation thickness.
